Upright Bass

Daniel Thatcher

Daniel ThatcherOriginally from Munich, Germany, where he grew up in a bilingual and very musical household, Daniel found his connection with music at an early age. After years of piano and guitar lessons, he eventually discovered the upright bass, which has become his primary musical voice.

Daniel holds a Bachelors degree in Classical Performance from the prestigious Western Michigan University, where he was also heavily involved in the jazz program. Upon graduating, he moved to Chicago and has been a full-time professional musician and educator ever since. Daniel is very active on Chicago's diverse jazz and improvised music scene, though he can be heard in a wide variety of musical settings. His experience playing with original rock bands, cover bands, salsa groups, as well as symphony orchestras makes him very versatile, an essential quality for any working musician.

While performing is his first love, Daniel is also very committed to teaching. His experience includes private guitar and bass lessons for students of all ages and capabilities, as well as group lessons, instrumental combo coaching and private piano instruction.

In addition to teaching at DayJams, a national rock and roll day camp for children, for the last four years, he has also served as adjunct faculty at Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, where he taught upright bass and directed a jazz combo.

Daniel's joy for teaching is reflected in his enthusiasm for sharing of musical knowledge, as well as creating a relaxed yet professional atmosphere, which he feels is necessary to facilitate learning at any level.
